SMT regularly participates in charitable and sporting events. Taking part is important, and we are proud of our cooperation with local communities and that we are able to support local charities.

Mercy Ships Challenge
Autumn 2024

Autumn 2024 was an active time for people at SMT Shipping. During October and November, SMT colleagues around the world were exercising, running, swimming, walking, going to the gym as part of our Challenge to raise money for Mercy Ships. We are delighted to report that Euro 50,000 was raised for this worthwhile cause. This includes the money raised during the SMT Cycling Classic events in November 2024.
Mercy Ships is a charity deploying hospital ships in some of the poorest parts of the world, delivering free healthcare to people in need. Mercy Ships intend to use the donation for their dental care project on board the Global Mercy in Sierra Leone.
Thank you to all our SMT colleagues who took part in this sporting challenge. We are delighted that this will help Mercy Ships continue their good work bringing healthcare to those in need.
Cycling Classic 2024

SMT’s third Cycling Classic event took place on Saturday 16 November 2024. This year there were nearly 60 participants in total, with cyclists from SMT as well as overseas guests from the shipping and insurance world. There were two routes in western Cyprus, a mountain bike race of 22 kilometres around the Aphrodite hills and the Rock of Aphrodite and a road bike ride of 68 kilometres in the Paphos region.
SMT have been participating in all kinds of sporting events for the past few weeks to raise funds for Mercy Ships, a charity organisation providing hospital ships to treat people in need of medical care. The aim of the SMT Cycling Classic was to raise further funds for the Mercy Ships challenge. The amount raised will be announced when the challenge ends at the end of November. Well done to all the cyclists for taking part. There was some great feedback from the participants

Adopt the Hive

SMT Limassol office is delighted to participate in an imaginative programme dedicated to bee conservation in Cyprus.
"Adopt the Hive" is a unique initiative developed by ECOmbare and Oros Maxaira to help companies contribute to bee conservation in Cyprus. In October 2024 SMT adopted two hives directly supporting these vital pollinators and showcasing a commitment to sustainability.
During the first stage of this process, colleagues from SMT Limassol and their families participated in painting the hives.
Later on, the SMT team will return to learn about the practical side of beekeeping — honey collection. The organisers will teach our team how to gather honey from the SMT hives. It is calculated that as much as 30kg of honey will be produced which will be packaged into 250g jars.

Charity Beach-Volley Tournament

The Charity Beach-Volley Tournament is the main Annual Sporting/Charity Event of the Cyprus Shipping Chamber and is organised by them, under the auspices of the Minister of Communications and Works.
SMT was proud to participate in 2024, represented by the team of Andrea Christofides (Captain), Charis Nissis, Evros Stephanou, Thomas Kazantzis, Artem Klyuev, Angelos Kyprianou and George D. Whilst they did not win the tournament, they made it through the first and second weekends to the final weekend. Well done to them. Their time and effort helped to raise money for the “One Dream One Wish” children’s charity association, helping children battling cancer.
Ultrabaltic Swim 2024

Gdansk
SMT was one of the sponsors of an attempt to swim 170 km across the Baltic (from Poland, Mrzezyno to Sweden), a feat that has never been completed. Polish sportsman Bartlomiej Kubkowski was making his third attempt to swim the distance on 26 August 2024. Bartlomiej managed to swim an incredible 71 km before his attempt was sadly aborted. Whilst he wasn’t successful, his great achievement has sparked sizable donations to the “Cancer Fighters” foundation. SMT is a proud sponsor of this event and is grateful to contribute to Cancer Fighters.
Shanties under the Crane

Shanties under the Crane (Szanty pod Zurawiem ) 22 – 25 August 2024 is a series of concerts which form part of the Baltic Sail Gdansk festival 23 – 26 August 2024.
SMT was a proud sponsor of the inaugural concert on 22 August which was broadcast on Radio Gdansk. It was an exciting event, full of melody and humour. Whether you attend the concert in person or listen on Radio Gdansk we are sure you will enjoy hearing some great sea shanties.
Umbrella Club

SMT was pleased to be an Eagle Sponsor of the Umbrella Club – a community-based charity in Connecticut that provides compassion, support, and financial assistance to local families in need. We enjoyed our participation in the 36th annual golf outing on Monday 17 June 2024. Andrew Zikopoulos and John Egan were among those taking part from SMT.
It was a great event and raised money for a worthwhile local cause.

Platres 3on3 Basketball

SMT was proud to participate in the Platres 3on3 Basketball tournament on 2 June 2024 at the Platres Arena, Cyprus. The event supports the Mikroi Iroes Foundation and Europa Donna Cyprus, two non-profit organisations providing assistance and support to children battling leukaemia and people fighting breast cancer. SMT is delighted to be a silver sponsor as well as sending players to participate in the basketball tournament.

This Tournament is in aid of “To Alma” Child Development Centre, an early intervention centre that provides help and support for premature babies and young children with mental and physical developmental impediments.
The SMT team progressed to the quarter-final, only to be beaten on penalties. Well done to everyone who took part and a huge thank you to the family and friends who supported the event

Cycling Classic

This was our 2nd Cycling Classic, starting from the Aphrodite Hills, Cyprus with a group of over 30 cyclists. One group completed the 25km Mountain Bike ride, and another group the 60km road trip, cycling to the village of Dora in the mountain area and back.
Dragon Boats & Beach Clean-up

In a significant collaborative effort, the OPAP Limassol Marathon sponsor, SMT Shipping, and the OPAP Limassol Marathon organisers, 11 Blue Events, carried out a beach clean-up at the Crowne Plaza beach in Limassol.
Before the clean-up, participants also were introduced to the sport of dragon boating, guided by experienced instructors from the Raging Mouflons Dragon Boat Team, a sport growing in popularity in Cyprus.
This isn't the first eco-friendly initiative we have been involved in. In January 2023, SMT Shipping partnered with 11 Blue Events as part of their OPAP Limassol Marathon sponsorship for a tree planting event in Limassol.
