Delivery of Tamarack for Eureka Shipping
On 23rd July, SMT Shipping and Eureka launched their new vessel, Tamarack at Holland Shipyard. The event was attended by 150 invitees, including senior management and employees from Eureka and SMT, as well as Holland Shipyard directors, partners, and distinguished guests.
The delivery of Tamarack marks a new chapter in efficient bulk shipping. Holland Shipyard, in collaboration with Eureka and SMT Shipping, designed this 12,500 DWT self-discharging cement carrier with efficiency and operational performance in mind. The vessel was specifically tailored for operations in Canada’s Great Lakes region and will transform activities within this area.
Tamarack is fitted with diesel-electric propulsion, featuring four generator sets, two 360-degree rudder propellers, and a powerful bow thruster for optimal manoeuvrability. It also boasts four dedicated cement cargo holds with a total capacity of 10,700 m³, supported by high-efficiency loading and discharging systems.
The design utilises fuel-efficient engines capable of running on HVO biofuel and advanced cargo handling systems that minimise overall energy consumption. To reduce operational noise, the ship has been fitted with extensive noise insulation and silencers. Furthermore, the vessel is prepared for shore power connectivity, enabling zero-emission operations in ports as infrastructure advances.
At the launch event, Kai Grotterud (CEO Eureka Shipping) highlighted Eureka Shipping’s strategic commitment to fleet modernisation, which positions the company at the forefront of cement fleet rejuvenation. He added that Tamarack embodies over three years of dedicated development work, creating a purpose-built vessel that maximises cargo capacity within the restricted draft limitations of the Canadian Great Lakes. He stated: “We have together created an exceptional vessel, completely tailored for its intended purpose, delivering highly efficient transportation with minimal environmental impact.”
Mark Voorham (CEO of SMT Shipping) remarked in his speech that this vessel marks yet another milestone in the valued and ongoing collaboration with Holland Shipyards and Concordia Damen. He extended special appreciation to the technical teams of Holland Shipyards, who worked alongside the teams of Eureka, SMT, and our Canadian partner, CSL Shipping.
SMT wishes fair seas and smooth voyages for Tamarack and all who sail on her.
