SMT would like to introduce our official sustainability mascot, Herbert the Sea Dog. Herbert is a scrappy little dog who lives by the sea in New Zealand. His story goes, that one fine day he set sail with his owner but the weather quickly turned bad, throwing Herbert overboard. For 30 hours Herbert was left to endure the open ocean alone before being found. Herbert’s bravery and dedication helped save his life, now he is dedicated to helping us become the most sustainable shipping company we can be!

On the weekend of March 19-20, 2022, SMT Shipping along with ~10,000 other participants, joined in the annual Limassol Marathon! What is labelled as the largest sporting event in Cyprus also acted as an amazing opportunity to unite our various offices, further strengthening our close-knit family company.

The SMT team supplied about 20 runners across 4 of our offices, including our own Director of Management Board, Robert E. Abraham, who ran the full marathon with an impressive time of 4:05:00. We look forward to next year’s race and our related team-building event this fall!

SMT’s sponsorship with Limassol Marathon is closely linked to our commitment to mental and physical wellness.  Many employees – local and international — participate in race events, and the SMT community is encouraged to link their own wellness journeys to the marathon by sharing their fitness activities on our marathon-inspired social media group.

The marathon is a major community event in Cyprus – and an equally major event for our local and international employees.  Employees and their families support the event as participants, volunteers, and supporters, and we encourage employees from other offices to travel to Cyprus and join in the fun.

In 2021 the worst forest fire to hit the island in decades took place. Fanned by strong winds, the fire swept through the southern foothills of the Troodos and forced the evacuation of 10 villages. To support these devastated areas, SMT will join other marathon organizers in a reforestation program in the fire devastated areas — one tree for every finisher in the any of the individual races.  As part of this program, SMT will join a team-building event in October and November in cooperation with the Department of Forests.

The Marathon raises awareness and funds for a coalition of charitable organization promoting family health and wellness throughout Cyprus. SMT is a proud sponsor of the event and the vital programming it supports.
